Description :

Body sub-cylindrical; a faint golden spot behind gill opening, followed by a faint golden mid-lateral line; a distinct black spot at hind border of gill cover (absence of pigment). Distinguished from all clupeids in the northern Indian Ocean by its pelvic fin ray count of I, 8.

Maximum length: 23 cm (FL), common length: 15-20 cm (FL)

Phytoplankton like diatoms and dinoflagellates; Zooplankton like mysids, copepods, fish eggs and larvae

Utilization

Marketed fresh, dried, dry-salted; fried in oil and consumed generally. The average catch of Oil sardine along Goa is about 20,000 tonnes during 2000-2012. The species contributes to about 10-20%% of the total gross value of marine fish landings in Goa both at landing and retail level.
